Due to the mild four-season climate that Concho residents enjoy, golfing and fishing can be experienced right in town at least 10 out of twelve months of the year. The White Mountains and Mogollon Rim areas offer the widest range of activities and sports that can be found in Arizona. National Parks such as the Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, and Canyon de Chelley are easy driving distances away.

The
Concho
Valley Golf Club is an 18-hole championship golf course designed
by famed golf course architect, Jack Snyder.
Open most of the year, the golf course and country club restaurant
are
open
to the public. Private memberships are available. For more information or to reserve tee times
contact: cvcc@wmonline.com
or call (800) 658-8071.
If
you are interested in a variety of golfing opportunities, there are over
a half-dozen other golf courses located within a 30 to 50 minute drive
of Concho.
Concho
Lake is one of Arizona's few spring-fed lakes. It was created in the late
1800's as an irrigation reservoir for the original settlers
by constructing a dam on Concho Creek. In the 1970's, the Arizona Game & Fish Department
built a camping area with two boat ramps and started stocking the lake
annually with rainbow trout. The lake is open year round with few days of
surface freeze. Early morning
and sunset visits to the lake are the best time for viewing eagles, migrating
bird flocks and other wildlife.
The
village of Concho is mostly gently rolling to flat terrain. With so many
days of good weather, biking and evening strolls around the neighborhood
are a pleasure. Spacious lots,
excellent soil and over 300 days of sunny weather annually make gardening
a favorite pastime.
From May through October, visit the Concho
Farmer's Market every Saturday in Old Concho. It's a great way to
pick up locally grown produce, discover local handicrafts, and meet your
neighbors. In the summertime, check with Red
Rock Ranch outside of town for the tour schedule of their lavender
farm. See the lavender in bloom and learn about the products that come
from this beautiful flower.
Directly surrounding Concho are many areas of public use land which are
open for hiking, horseback riding, rock hunting, or just general exploration
by car or on foot.
In the evening, the night skies are breathtaking. The Milky Way is so
thick it looks like you could reach up and grab it. Plus, due to the dry
Arizona climate, nighttime insects are minimal so evenings are pleasant
for barbequeing and outdoor parties.
The
White Mountain recreational area abounds in world-class hunting, fishing,
and camping along with trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and
off-road vehicles. There are dozens of lakes and streams for fishing within
a 60 mile radius offering trout, bass, catfish, walleye, and other game
fish (see Day Trips on this page). Many state
records have been caught in the White Mountain and reservation lakes.
Hunters come from all over the world for the great opportunities to hunt
elk, deer, antelope, turkey, bear, moutain lion, and javalina.
In the winter, Sunrise
Ski Resort is an hour and half drive away. Most of the
national and reservation lands have areas for cross-country skiing and
snowmobiling. In the summer, water skiing is available on Lyman Lake just
south of St. Johns.
The White Mountains recreational area encompasses the White Mountain Apache Reservation, Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and portions of the Mogollon Rim country.
Just 30-40 minutes away, the main business districts of Show Low and Lakeside/Pinetop offer movie theaters, fast food & fine dining, retail & grocery shopping, gift & crafts stores, art & music fairs, bowling, lakes, historical museums and parks. The White Mountain Apache Tribe operates the Hon-Dah Casino outside of Pinetop with casino gaming, dining, live entertainment and a conference center. St. Johns has festivals such as San Juan Days, equestrian events, and the Apache County Fair.
There
are easy day trips that can be made to many historical sites and national
monuments such as the Petrified Forest & Painted Desert, the Raven
Site Ruins with hands-on excavation tours, Casa Malpais Ruins, Fort Apache
National Park, and Walnut Canyon National Monument. From Concho, it's less than an hour "door-to-shore"
drive to Show Low Lake,
Lyman
Lake, or Fool
Hollow Lake for great fishing and picnic areas. Have a need to play
the one-armed bandits? Hon-Dah Casino is only 50 minutes away for slots,
supper and shows. Or load up the family
in the car and explore the hundreds of back roads that are just minutes
away.
